New York Times Seeks Qualified Judges

The Senate may be in recess, but nominations are still in the news. The New York Times urged the Bush Administration to withdraw its returned nominations "and replace them with nominees who do not appeal exclusively to the most extreme wing of the Republican Party." The editorial focused in particular on Fifth Circuit nominee Michael Wallace. It noted that he has a "long record of insensitivity to civil rights" and emphasized the ABA's unanimously rating him "not qualified" -- a rating that, as we've noted before, was based on interviews with nearly 70 judges and lawyers, one third of whom "expressed 'grave concerns' about his judicial temperament."
